In general, it is a good practice to have a predefined template available for the end user to create a new site. This will eliminate the need to configure every time you create a new site and ensures all the sites have been created using common standards.

By default, this feature is not enabled in SharePoint Online for the Publishing Site as seen below:

In order to enable “Save Site as Template” feature follow the below-listed steps: 

  1. Open site in SharePoint Designer 
  2. Select “Site” and  then “Site Options”

    3. Change value of “SaveSiteAsTemplateEnabled” from “false” to “true”

    4.  After changing the value 

    5. Add this URL “”/_layouts/savetmpl.aspx” at the end of the site  as seen below

    6. You will be redirected to the following page from where you can save the site
